 "Nice idea.." 2007-01-24
By Dexy9000 (Earth)
Shame whoever designed it didn't try and live with it for a few months first. Touchscreen phones sound like a wonderfull idea, this one's just totally impractical. Stylus driven phones will never catch on, not even with idiot gadget lovers like me that just have to have cool looking things like this.

This being a Nokia it has alot of cool phone features; the size and weight does count against it, but it does sport bluetooth so couple it with a headset and you'll overcome that. Texting on the other hand just doesn't work unless you're stationary. The handwriting recognition just didn't like me and the onscreen keyboard/stylus combination isn't something you can knock out a quick reply with.

The pda functions would, I guess, come in handy for people who need that sort of thing, as opposed to someone who just wants a cool new phone. The internet browser works ok when it isn't crashing, although going back to pre-broadband speeds kills, why they couldn't have made this a 3G model I have no idea.

All in all I liked the phone but couldn't really recommend it to anyone.

"Nice features, not so nice size" 2005-07-21
By Niklas Kari (Helsinki)
I tried out Nokia 7710 for three months as part of a Nokia pilot. This is not a phone I would myself acquire, but I have to admit it has some cool features. The speakers are the best I have seen (or rather heard) on a mobile phone. This enables using 7710 as a convenient music player when you are out with your friends e.g. on a picnic. The big screen combined with EDGE-connection (>100 kbps) made browsing with the Opera browser pleasurable. It is cool to have the option to quickly check out your e-mail or some web page wherever you are. Also the 1.3 Mega pixel camera was good. The ear plugs that came with the phone are made very robust.

7710 hasn't got a real keypad (a few buttons though), but a touch screen and a stick. The menus are browsed by clicking on icons and text input works through handwriting identification or through a virtual keyboard. I got quite fast used to using it, but it can be quite annoying in the beginning.

In my opinion the biggest downside with 7710, and the reason I would never buy it, is its size. I won't a phone that I can carry in the pocket of my trousers and 7710 is too big for that. Another quite annoying feature is that the phone is quite slow. Hence it takes some annoying extra seconds to open menus and applications. A downside is also that some pieces of software such as Agile Messenger weren't available for the 7710 when I used it. However, 7710 comes with the most important software included (e.g. photo gallery, music player).

I can recommend 7710 to any one who isn't put down by the size of the phone. I guess you can get used to all the other features.

 "Excellent phone" 2009-07-13
By T. Christidou (Bournemouth, UK)
Had this phone for over 2 years and it has proved very reliable. I replaced it after 2 years cause I got an upgrade but it was still in excellent condition. It's battery died 4 years after I got it but tested it with a new battery and still going strong.

 "It's a great all-round 3G smartphone" 2007-05-21
By Steven Goacher (London)
I've been a fan of Symbian phones for a few years. There is a large amount of free and commercial software available for them. The 6680 comes with a glut of decent software onboard. Document viewers, Web Browser, File Explorer, MP3 Player, Movie Player, Photo viewer, Email client, and so on.

This was one of the early Symbian mobiles to work properly with TomTom navigation software, and Route 66 too. You just need the software and a Bluetooth GPS receiver, and satellite navigation works nicely.

It has a decent easy-to-use interface, with hot-keys that you can program to pull up your contact list or other programmable functions. I find it works well for one-handed use, and the screen is big, colourful and nice to use. For once, Nokia have sensibly made the RS-MMC flash memory card hot-swappable, i.e. you can take it out whilst the phone is on.

The 6630 was Nokia's first 3G mobile. Then the 6680 came out, with a nicer design, better buttons, front and rear camera - basically a "fixed 6630". The 3G signal does have reception problems and mobile providers usually sign you up to a 3G account (falls back to 2G when out of 3G zone) when you have a 3G-capable phone. I would say any 3G phone has similar issues. When used on a pure 2G network (in a reasonable signal area) it has no problems with signal whatsoever.

The camera might be "only 1.3 megapixels" but it is a good quality 1.3 rather than a bad quality 2,3 megapixel. It has an led flash for taking pictures in less than optimal conditions (e.g. the pub).

The mobile comes with Nokia's horrible sync software, a sync cable, and a pair of stereo headphones (the 6680 makes a commendable MP3 player). On that note, it plays MP3 and MIDI files very nicely and with a decent volume over the speaker or headphone.

There are better mobiles nowadays, (I'm quite keen on the HTC range) but this is a commendable, well-made, works well, decent model that first came out a couple of years ago.

 "Dissapointed" 2006-02-01
By
When I first saw this phone, I expected great things. It looks great, and Nokia have a brilliant reputation. I have had this phone for four months now, and I am dissapointed. The features this phone offers are brilliant, theres no doubting that, but it freezes all the time when sending texts and the only way I can turn it off is by taking the battery out. This is really starting to annoy me. It is also very slow to turn the phone on, and to load up the menus. Most of the type the phone will not send a text, and then the whole phone will crash. I am very dissapointed.

 "A big letdown" 2006-01-30
By Mrs. Jacqueline F. Hanrahan (watford, uk)
I have had this phone for two weeks on a contract and I must say I am sorely dissappointed. It frequently goes pearshape. It freezes up and I cannot access the menu, or switch it off which is a real pain. I am beginning to think I should of stuck with the Nokia 1100. I would not recommend this phone to anyone at all. I have always had Nokia phones, and so far this is the only dissappointment I have had. It states 1-10 for user friendliness also. The manual is also rubbish as you cannot find anything in it. Also, it is not compact enough. Seriously thinking of getting another 1100, and putting this phone into retirement.

"A top-notch phone- No tech faults for me!!" 2009-11-21
By S. Jackson (North West England)
Well this phone for me is the one i've been waiting for, excellent camera, dvd quality video @30 fps (frames per second- you need to get this or higher for good quality video).

The buttons are tough as well as the feel of the surrounding case (but get a cover anyways, the amazon one with the screen protector and charger is the one im happy with).

Voice activated calls and menus with voice read back of your messages (funny if someone is a swearer!) found that a good toy to play with.

Fm radio & transmitter- well the transmitter is ace, no need for an expensive cd/dvd player, just download your tunes send em to the phone and sync your transmitting channel with the one on your car radio and streams through the air with ease, no need for cd's/usb!

Loads of stuff on this phone not to mention adobe pdf reader! Download your ebooks send em to your phone and you can have up to 8 gb's worth of books if you like!!

I have had the phone for 2 weeks now i have the latest firmware installed, I find no bugs or hangs with the Symbian operating software and i've been battering it from menu to menu.

The only gripe I have with this phone is the music player could be better, bass'ier and louder, please note that ive come from the excellent music playing sony ericsson w580i so was expecting equal or better than my previous phone.

"A good sequel to a great summer movie" 2009-09-08
By Andrew Siew (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
The Nokia N86 is like a rare, good sequel to a great summer movie. Loaded with enough technical features to give almost any smartphone user a migrain, this new addition to the N-series comes with, among other typical smartphone features, a large 8MP camera sensor, an FM transmitter, a high capacity battery (1200mah) and a beefy, 128mb RAM.

Nokia has been cramping more and more features into their smartphones ever since the introduction of the N95 two years ago. Physically, the N86 does not appear to be any more compact than the N95. But aside from the additional gimicks mentioned earlier, the N86 also has an additional internal 8GB flash memory and a digital compass to work with its MAPS application. It has the same double-sliding form factor as the N95, but the front surface of the N86, unlike the N95, is all glass. The control buttons on the top will take a while for anyone to get used to, as other than the C (cancel) button, there is no indication as to what they do.

The N86 also uses AMOLED for its display, as compared to older N-series models, making the system more power efficient and allows users to stay unplugged for a longer time. And perhaps for the first time, the USD2.0 connector for this N-series lets you charge the phone while you're transferring music / images / videos in or out of the phone.

Perhaps the best thing about the N86 is its sheer speed compared to earlier N-series models. Personally i don't see the point of having a phone that can do everything, but can't even keep up with a 70-dollar phone when it comes to doing text messaging or taking pictures. The N86, coupled with the 128MB RAM, allows it to be more responsive than earlier N-series models, so it doesn't feel like a convoluted, heavy mass in your pocket. Other N-series models, like the N96 or the N95, are just trying too hard to do too many things at the same time without the RAM to handle all the tasks.

Unfortunately for the N86, the new-agey chassis and GUI design will take a bit of getting used to. It is a bit loud (especially the white version), and looks funny if you take it out of your pocket during a business lunch. It is however nevertheless a speedy and powerful multimedia device and a long awaited sequel to the N95. It's a movie you don't want to miss.

 "Paperweight" 2009-08-09
By Portaderry (Derry, N Ireland)
This phone is very disappointing. I bought this phone mainly because of its camera and geotagging. The photos (when it manages to take them) are very good. I have discovered that several photos were not there after I took them, which scares me a little and suggests this device should not be used as a replacement and certainly not a substitute for a digital camera. You have been warned. The GPS is non-existent and it has yet to geotag a single picture for me! All the menus and settings are correct but I would definately not rely on it.

I did not try the music feature, which I am dreading. As far as the ovi system, it seems to be a bit of a gimmick and could well be the rock Nokia perishes on.

Overall, this is an expensive phone and it honestly does not do the things it claims, at least reliably. The SE brand seems to outshine this particular model. I suggest you try something else. I am using this as a paperweight.

"Feature Packed with a couple of small niggles" 2009-10-01
By Mr. Robin G. Parkin (Leeds, UK)
Before I get into this I will say I love this phone. As a business user I've had a number of smart phones over the years from Nokia, HTC, I-Mate etc and this is far and away the best in terms of build quality, aesthetics, functions, reliablity and ease of use.

I use it to sync with our corporate exchange server and it works a treat except - and here is the first gripe - if you use subfolders with your inbox it doesn't notify you when you get mail in a subfolder - only your main inbox so if you are "organised" and have emails from certain people going automatically into subfolders you have to look in each one to see if you have new mail.

The functions on the phone are comprehensive with media playing, camera, etc all as standard although - gripe 2 - the camera sometimes fails to work and you are left looking at a blank screen.

It also has office functionality built in so you can view, edit and create word and excel documents. The only problem here - final gripe - is that it won't read office 2007 documents and the option on the phone to upgrade the software so that it will doesn't seem to work.

I hope that was useful. I know it seems like I've concentrated on the gripes but I still wouldn't change it for the world. A fantastic phone at a great price.

 "Great phone but......" 2009-09-09
By D. Nicholls
i think this is probably the best phone i have ever owned, it has everything. the only problem i have had with this phone is that the sensor broke for the slide, sometimes it would register that i have opened the keyboard even though i have not touched it. unfortunately i did not have insurance but as this phone is soo good it comes with a 2 year warranty so it is being fixed as i type.
